What are some negative aspects of owning an electric bike?
This bike weighs more than a non-electric bike. It usually weighs 5-15 pounds. When you ride it, you won't worry because the motor helps you pedal. However, going up and down stairs or even a curb can be a bit difficult.
If you ignore a standard road or mountain bike for a few months or years, nothing bad will happen. At worst, you'll have to replace the tires as they deteriorate (which takes years, not months). Lubrication in bearings, etc. is fine, and parts on a stationary bike don't wear out if they don't move.
A bike with a battery, however, has a battery that requires maintenance. If you don’t ride it for a few months, the battery could discharge itself and go bad. If you leave it plugged in, the battery is continuously trickle charged, and it will wear out from being kept charged all the time (this is one reason why laptop batteries wear out very quickly —- most people use laptops while plugged in continuously). Since the battery is typically the most expensive part of the bike if you don’t regularly use your electric bike you’re going to be paying the price of the bike in batteries in quick order.
